Lord of the Rings Online
The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar (LOTRO) is set in a fantasy universe based upon J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth writings, which are arguably the basis for all fantasy MMORPGs. It is set during the time period of the trilogy "The Lord of the Rings".
Much of the gameplay is very standard to the MMORPG format. The player controls a character avatar which interacts with other players, NPCs and other entities in the lands of Middle Earth. A character is improved by gaining levels which increase after it earns a set amount of experience points through PvE combat and quests.
The main storyline (also known as the "Epic Quest Line") is set up as a series of "Books", which feature quests called "Chapters". There were initially eight Books when the game was released and more are released with each content update.
PvP combat is in a form called "Monster Play". This is unlocked when a character reaches level 10; players can then play the part of a level 50 monster. These monster players (also known as 'creeps') have their own quests, titles and deeds, and fight the Heroes (characters of level 40 and above known as 'freeps') in the Ettenmoors.
